This new version of akastatistic.org is currently under construction.

The akastatistic project began in 2004 in response to both the increasing radical conservatism of American politics and the often apathetic role the arts and the academy play in our culture. It emphasizes spaces where the arts have some currency; between the gallery and the public, the museum and the academy lies a grey zone in which artists, intellectuals and their publics can communicate and play in conversation and confrontation. Straddling the areas of traditional art and popular culture (games, clothing, brands), the akastatistic project is involved in the various communities it attempts to influence, and is committed to bridging gaps between art, scholarship, and political activism.

Being also-known-as a statistic implies that we understand our roles in society as individuals and as integrated groups, not just as anonymous numbers, and that behind every statistic lies a network of history, money and power. Therefore, the akastatistic project looks for the places in which people fall through the cracks, where the only thing left is a code: race, gender, sexuality, class, etc.

akastatistic takes a three-pronged approach: as a scholar, I emphasize locations of instability and the possibility for opposition in our contemporary (media based) society; as an artist, I attempt to engage audiences both viscerally and intellectually, forging bonds between statistical information and emotional response; as a curator, I seek artists and venues that are committed to social interaction, and form exhibitions around a playful, profound exchange between artists and their publics.
